The Nigerian government has issued a flood alert, urging citizens residing in riverbanks and flood-prone areas to relocate immediately to prevent a potential disaster.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) specifically advised people living around the River Benue Basin to swiftly move to safer locations, as water levels in the river have risen to dangerous levels due to persistent heavy rainfall.
In a statement released on Thursday, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, highlighted the seriousness of the situation. He explained that the combination of rising water levels and ongoing rains has significantly increased the risk of flooding in the region. Additionally, residents along the River Niger were also advised to relocate, as the authorities managing the Kainji and Jebba dams are working to control the flow of floodwaters.
Mohammed stressed the need for close cooperation with emergency management agencies, underscoring the importance of building community resilience to reduce the devastating impact of potential flooding.
This alert follows recent warnings issued by the Nigerian government after Cameroon released water from the Lagdo Dam, heightening the risk of flooding in Nigeria.
The urgency of the situation was further highlighted by the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, where the overflowing Alau Dam led to the tragic deaths of more than 30 people and the destruction of thousands of homes.
