JUST IN: Abuja National Mosque Gets First Ever Igbo Imam

The management of the Abuja National Mosque has made a historic appointment by selecting Professor Iliyasu Usman as the first-ever Igbo Muslim to serve as an Imam at the mosque. Usman is set to deliver his inaugural sermon, or khutbah, during the Jumm’at prayers today, marking a significant moment for the Muslim community in Nigeria.

This appointment has been widely celebrated, particularly by the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), which has lauded Usman’s dedication to Islamic scholarship and leadership.

SEMON has expressed deep admiration for his commitment to the faith, viewing his new role as a recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Islamic knowledge.

In a public statement, SEMON also praised the inclusiveness of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) under the leadership of its President-General, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the Sultan of Sokoto.

According to SEMON, this appointment reflects the Council’s commitment to diversity and inclusion within the Nigerian Muslim community.

The organization emphasized that Usman’s new position is not only a personal achievement but also a divine responsibility. They noted that his role as Imam would place him in a unique position to guide the Muslim community in worship and service to Allah, and expressed optimism that his leadership would strengthen the Igbo Muslim community and promote unity among Muslims throughout Nigeria.
