Ahmed Yayari Mohammed, the factional acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced his assumption of leadership of the party. He was appointed by a faction that opposes the current leadership of Illiya Damagum, following recent defections within the PDP.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Yayari expressed his belief that the PDP, as the main opposition party, has failed to meet the expectations of its members and the public. However, he promised that under his leadership, the new National Working Committee (NWC) would strictly adhere to the rule of law and the constitution of the party, ensuring fairness for all party members.
Yayari emphasized the importance of fairness and inclusivity in his leadership, stating, “The NWC under my leadership will be guided strictly by the Constitution of our Party, and I will at all times be fair to all members irrespective of their status, position, or state in the Party. Only by ensuring fairness can we foster loyalty and commitment from our members.”
He also outlined his immediate priorities, which include restoring the confidence of party members. To achieve this, Yayari announced plans to convene a long-overdue National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which has been scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024. He stressed that this meeting is crucial for addressing internal issues and setting the party on a path toward unity and progress.
In line with the PDP’s constitution, Yayari called on the North Central Zone, which is constitutionally entitled to nominate a replacement for the former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, to meet urgently and forward a nominee for consideration. This nominee will serve out the remainder of Ayu’s tenure, and their name will be presented at the October 24 NEC meeting for approval.
Yayari expressed gratitude for the numerous messages of support, solidarity, and best wishes he has received since his appointment as Acting National Chairman. He reassured party members that the NWC under his leadership is now prepared to fulfill its role as an effective opposition.
He vowed to work towards strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and advocating for a responsible and responsive government. In conclusion, Yayari reiterated the NWC’s commitment to fulfilling its duties within the framework of the party’s constitution and maintaining a united front in the quest for national development and good governance.
