Aisha Yesufu, a prominent Nigerian human rights activist, recently clarified that her support for Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, is not unconditional. During an interview on the podcast “Mic On”, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Yesufu expressed her readiness to shift her allegiance in the 2027 presidential election if a better candidate were to emerge.
Yesufu made it clear that she is not a member of the Labour Party, and her support for Obi in the previous election was based solely on her belief that he was the best choice at the time. Her approach to politics, she emphasized, prioritizes the well-being of Nigeria over party loyalty or personal relationships.
Known for her activism in major movements like #BringBackOurGirls and #EndSARS, Yesufu underscored her commitment to Nigeria’s future, stating, “Absolutely, if a better candidate appears, I will support that candidate. I am not bound to anyone or anything.” She further pointed out that even Peter Obi himself has acknowledged that he is more concerned with Nigeria’s progress than with becoming president, and that he would back a superior candidate if one arose.
Yesufu explained that her focus is on saving Nigeria, not promoting a particular individual for a position of power. “It’s not about anyone occupying an office,” she said, “it’s about rescuing our country.”
In addition to her stance on Obi, Yesufu strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a “bad person” in light of the worsening economic conditions that have affected millions of Nigerians. Her comments came in response to Senator Ali Ndume’s statements, which she addressed on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“Tinubu is the bad person. Call a spade a spade, not a garden implement,” she wrote, stressing that calling Tinubu “a bad person” is an understatement.
