Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced on Monday that President Bola Tinubu will address the nation in a broadcast scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 7 AM. This address is part of the celebrations marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.
In his statement, Onanuga emphasized the significance of the broadcast, urging television and radio stations, along with other electronic media outlets, to connect to the network services provided by the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria to ensure widespread coverage of the event.
In a related context, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the recent general elections and former Vice President of Nigeria, expressed concerns regarding the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
He warned that the country is on the verge of becoming a one-party state under the current administration of President Tinubu. Abubakar made these remarks in his Independence Day message to the Nigerian populace on Monday.
He called on various stakeholders, including politicians and statesmen, to take proactive measures to safeguard democracy in Nigeria from what he described as looming threats of oppression.
Atiku accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating internal processes in a way that undermines opposition parties and renders them ineffective, thereby contributing to the risk of dictatorship in the nation.
