The Abia State Government has announced that it will begin paying the new minimum wage to workers starting from October. This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Monday.

The briefing followed the State Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti. Kanu confirmed that the wage increase will apply to all categories of workers in the state, signaling the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.

In addition, the commissioner revealed that the state is planning to enhance the administration of justice by constructing 17 court halls, one in each of the 17 local government areas of Abia State. This move is aimed at bolstering the judicial infrastructure and ensuring effective justice delivery across the state.

Kanu also shared that the Ministry of Health is organizing a free medical outreach next week in Ugwunnagbo. This outreach will offer a range of health services, including free medical consultations, maternal and child healthcare, and diagnostic tests, at no cost to the beneficiaries.

Moreover, in recognition of the achievements of Abia athletes, Governor Otti has finalized plans to host the state’s para-Olympic athletes, who have brought pride to Abia. Special mention was made of Miss Onyinyechi Mark, who won a gold medal in the 61kg weight category, and Miss Esther Nworgu, who secured a silver medal in the 41kg class. This event is part of the government’s efforts to encourage and celebrate the accomplishments of its athletes.
