The Lagos State Government has announced an increase in boarding fees for its model colleges, citing the need to ensure better welfare for students.
According to Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the current N35,000 boarding fee, which has been in place since 2021, is no longer realistic in 2024 ¹.
As of the 2024/2025 session, the new boarding fee will be N100,000 per term, starting from September 15, 2024 ¹ ² ³. This decision was made to provide nutritious food, adequate security, and other essential services for the students.
The government stressed that it prioritizes the students’ welfare and well-being, acknowledging that the decision may not be popular with all parents ¹.
Key Points to Note:
New Boarding Fee: N100,000 per term, effective from the 2024/2025 session
Previous Fee: N35,000 per term, unchanged since 2021
Rationale: To ensure better welfare and provision of essential services for students
Government Support: Free education in 1,021 primary schools, 369 junior secondary, and 329 senior secondary schools, including 32 model colleges
The government urges parents to understand the necessity of this increase, emphasizing that it’s crucial for the students’ overall development and well-being ¹.
