Borno State Government Shuts Down Schools For Two Weeks Over Flooding

The Borno State Government has announced the closure of all public and private schools for two weeks due to widespread flooding across the state. This decision was made known through a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation on Monday.

The statement explained that the closure follows an inspection tour of the Alo Dam, a significant water reservoir fed by Lake Chad. Recent heavy rainfall has caused leakages in the dam’s banks, resulting in flooding in numerous riverine and flood-prone areas within the state.

The announcement comes just days after the 2024/2025 academic session resumed on September 9, 2024.

Signed by the Acting Director of School Services, Grema Bulama, the statement also noted that the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bukar Tijjani, visited the dam on the orders of the State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum. The purpose of the visit was to assess the condition of the dam, which has been a major source of water for the state, and to investigate the ongoing flooding issues, which have affected the state capital in recent years.

This development coincides with similar actions taken by Edo and Kano States, where schools have been indefinitely closed due to the recent sharp rise in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
