End Protest Now To Save economy – Catholic Archbishop Begs Hungry Nigerian Youths

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos Diocese, Most Reverend Adewale Martins, has issued a statement appealing for an end to the ongoing nationwide protests, citing concerns about the potential negative impact on the economy.

In a statement signed by the Church’s Director of Social Communication, Reverend Father Anthony Godonu, Archbishop Martins acknowledged the widespread poverty and hunger that prompted the protests, but emphasized that the message has been conveyed and it is now time to end the demonstrations.

The Archbishop expressed concern that prolonging the protests beyond three days could have devastating effects on the economy.

He urged state actors to take measures to address the demands of the protesters and pacify the people. Additionally, he called on the Nigerian Police Force to continue exercising restraint in their engagement with protesters, while regretting incidents where the protests turned violent, resulting in loss of lives.

Archbishop Martins emphasized the importance of peaceful protest as a fundamental right of citizens, but also stressed the need to consider the economic implications of continued demonstrations.

He advocated for a round-table engagement between leaders and protesters to streamline demands and work towards a better Nigerian society.

By ending the protests, Martins believes that Nigerians can avoid further jeopardizing the economy and instead focus on constructive dialogue for positive change.
