Please Don’t Join Nationwide Protest Against Tinubu, Bad Governance – CAN Begs Christians

The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised Christians against participating in the planned nationwide ‘hunger protest’ scheduled for August 1-10, 2024.

The state CAN Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, emphasized that violence is not a viable means of achieving positive outcomes. Instead, he advocated for peaceful resolution and constant effort to maintain peace.

Yohanna, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, urged President Bola Tinubu to implement measures beyond palliatives, such as price control, addressing the rising cost of living, and reducing fuel prices. He also called on church leaders, local government coordinators, and parents to counsel their members and children, reminding them of the biblical teachings in Romans 13:1-3, which caution against rebelling against constituted authority.

Yohanna expressed concerns that peaceful protests can be hijacked by miscreants, leading to security threats, arrests, and shootings.

He emphasized that violence has never yielded positive results, instead causing destruction, loss of lives, and setbacks.

He noted that major stakeholders in Niger State have agreed not to join the protest, particularly since Governor Umaru Bago has taken steps to reduce grain prices and alleviate the suffering of the people.

Additionally, Yohanna urged governments at all levels to promote accountability, fairness, job opportunities, and justice, while avoiding ethnic and religious divisions.

He stressed the importance of sharing the commonwealth and ensuring that justice prevails.

Meanwhile, Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has dared Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT, over his statement that Abuja is not a place for protests.

Sowore asserted that the nationwide protest will commence in Abuja as planned.
