Candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured victories in all 25 local government chairmanship seats during the election held on Saturday, July 13, 2024.
Jerry Agbaike, the Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, announced on Sunday that one PDP candidate was returned unopposed.
PDP candidates competed against other parties and won in the 24 local government areas where elections took place.
However, there was no election in the Udu Local Government Area, as the PDP chairmanship candidate, Vincent Oyibode, ran unopposed.
Additionally, PDP candidates won 499 councillorship wards across the state. The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) secured one electoral ward in the Oshimili North Local Government Area.
The 25 newly elected chairmen are scheduled to be sworn in by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday, July 15, 2024.
This local government election in Delta State was the second since the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to the third tier of government.
The court mandated that the Federal Government should pay the 20.60% monthly allocation directly to the accounts of the 774 local governments, rather than to accounts controlled by state governors.
Additionally, the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment barred governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
