The University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom has named Sandie Okoro as its first female Chancellor, marking a significant milestone in its history.

Okoro, a distinguished British-Nigerian lawyer and advocate for equality rights, currently serves as Group General Counsel at Standard Chartered, overseeing legal and corporate governance functions.

A graduate of Birmingham herself, Okoro succeeds Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea CBE, who held the Chancellorship for a decade.

She follows in the footsteps of notable predecessors such as Joseph Chamberlain and Anthony Eden, Earl of Avon, becoming the eighth Chancellor since the university’s establishment in 1900.

Okoro’s career trajectory includes pivotal roles at prominent financial institutions and organizations, including HSBC and the World Bank Group, where she contributed significantly to legal and compliance frameworks.
