Following the promotion of CP Ussain Gumel to the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police (AIG), a new Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, has been deployed to Kano State.
Garba officially took up his duties on Monday, June 24. The handover and farewell ceremony took place at the Police Officers’ Mess in Pompai.
Reflecting on his tenure in Kano, which lasted from May 2, 2023, to June 24, Gumel highlighted the 2023 state governorship election as one of his significant challenges, given the intense political competition and unpredictable security environment.
Gumel elaborated on the post-election period management, which included handling the pronouncement of election results, navigating the court processes, and managing the Tribunal and Supreme Court sittings.
He also addressed recent attempts by certain political figures to politicize security issues related to the Kano State Emirate Council, stating that these challenges were manageable.
During his tenure, Gumel and his team faced numerous security issues such as armed robbery, thuggery (known locally as Daba), car theft, the threat of banditry in vulnerable local government areas, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
These security threats posed significant risks to public safety and hindered governance and socio-economic development in the state.
Despite these challenges, Gumel expressed pride in the achievements of the state police command under his leadership, emphasizing their professionalism and dedication to maintaining peace and order. He expressed confidence that these issues would be resolved in due time.
As he moves on to his new role, Gumel shared that the experiences and lessons from his time in Kano would continue to inspire and guide him in his future endeavors. He urged his colleagues in the Force to fully support the new police commissioner to ensure his success.
Gumel extended his gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for the trust and confidence placed in him during his tenure in Kano. He also thanked his colleagues in Kano State for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to duty.
