As Nigerians commemorated Democracy Day on June 12, a number of discontented citizens took to the streets on Wednesday to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of the country.
The protesters voiced their grievances over widespread hunger and economic hardship. In Lagos State, a group of protesters convened in Ikeja, calling for the removal of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. They argued that the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians have made it impossible for families to feed themselves adequately under Tinubu’s leadership.
The demonstrators carried placards with messages such as, “President Tinubu, let the poor breathe,” and “Reverse all anti-people, neoliberal policies of privatization.”
One protester took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their sentiments, stating, “We called for it and we are on the street in Ikeja Under Bridge. The tyrannical and oppressive government of @officialABAT must be shown the way out. We are hungry and angry. #WeAreHungryProtest #June12Protest.”
Similarly, in Abuja, another group of aggrieved Nigerians gathered under the Berger Bridge to protest against the Tinubu administration.
