The Benin Republic achieved a historic victory over the Super Eagles on Monday, defeating them 2-1. This result jeopardizes Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
Nigeria has only managed to secure three points from four World Cup qualification matches, putting them at serious risk of missing the upcoming football tournament.
The Super Eagles entered the match needing a win, having previously drawn with South Africa just a few days earlier.
Although Nigeria started the game positively, it took them 25 minutes to take the lead. Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge gave the Super Eagles the advantage by calmly slotting in a goal just inside the box.
However, the Cheetahs of Benin, under the guidance of former Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr, equalized in the 37th minute. Jodei Dossou capitalized on a defensive error by the Super Eagles to level the score.
Benin further compounded Nigeria’s difficulties just before the halftime whistle with a goal from Steve Mounie.
In the second half, Nigeria made several changes in an attempt to equalize. Despite their efforts, the Cheetahs defended resolutely, securing one of their most significant victories in football history.
As a result of Monday’s match, Nigeria now sits in 5th place in Group C of the qualification standings for the 2026 World Cup.
