The family and friends of the late Nollywood actor, John Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, have established a GoFundMe page to assist in covering the costs of his funeral. The actor’s family has announced that he will be laid to rest on June 28, 2024.

Mr Ibu passed away on March 2, 2024, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos after suffering a cardiac arrest, following several months of hospitalization during which one of his legs was amputated.

In preparation for the five-day funeral event, the central planning committee, composed of Mr Ibu’s family and friends, has called on the public for donations to ensure a successful burial.

A statement jointly signed by Monday Diamond, Chairman of the Central Planning Committee; Christy Ejiofor, Secretary of the Committee; and Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, revealed that the illness which led to Mr Ibu’s death had drained millions of naira in medical expenses, prompting the need for financial assistance.

The statement reads: “The Central Planning Committee of the Late John Okafor (family and friends) solicits financial support from the general public to help them execute a successful burial for the late Nollywood legend. Mr Ibu suffered from an ailment which consumed tens of millions (of naira) in hospital bills over nearly a year.”

The committee further highlighted that Mr Ibu, who died at the age of 62, left a significant legacy in Nollywood. The planned events are intended to honor his contributions to the industry and celebrate his life. The CPC urges the public to support this cause to give Mr Ibu the farewell he deserves. Contributions can be sent to a Zenith Bank account provided by the committee.

According to the funeral announcement signed by Sunday Okafor on behalf of the family, the burial arrangements will commence on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, with a novelty match between Nollywood and Rangers International. This will be followed by a candlelight procession for the actor on Wednesday, June 26. A wake will be held at Mr Ibu’s compound in Eziokwe Amurri, Enugu State, on Thursday, June 27.

The statement continues: “On Friday, June 28, 2024, his body will depart from Eastern Nigeria Medical Center to his hometown in Amurri, Nkanu West LGA at around 10 am for the burial ceremony. The funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, June 30, followed by a thanksgiving service.”

The Central Planning Committee also expressed their gratitude to those who have already contributed, notably Jeremiah Fufeyin, the head prophet of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry in Effurun, Delta state.
