The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to temporarily suspend their strike for one week.
This decision follows ongoing disputes over the lack of agreement on a new minimum wage and the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
TUC President Festus Osifo made the announcement in Abuja on Tuesday after a special joint national executive council meeting of the two unions.
“A joint NEC meeting of TUC/NLC has approved to relax the industrial action for one week with immediate effect,” Osifo stated in an interview with Channels Television. He also mentioned that a formal communiqué would be issued soon.
The unions initiated the strike on Monday to protest against the electricity tariff hike and the unresolved negotiations over a new minimum wage.
The strike caused significant disruptions across vital sectors of the economy, leading to the closure of schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports.
Additionally, the national power grid was shut down, resulting in widespread blackouts throughout the country.
