Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, announced that his administration has cleared over N5 billion of a 13-year backlog of gratuities owed to retired civil servants.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the payments commenced in February after thorough authentication and validation of the state and local government workers’ claims.
The government disbursed a total of N5,347,243,210.00 in gratuities to retired state and local government employees.
The statement detailed that 2,209 retired local government workers and primary school teachers, along with 1,642 retired state employees, received payments across five batches.
Specifically, the 4,198 retired state workers were initially owed N8,095,948,906.63. The first four batches saw 1,382 out of the 4,198 verified state pensioners receiving a total of N2,336,271,961.37. The fifth batch included 260 verified state pensioners, who were paid N510,094,956.35.
Furthermore, the fifth batch also saw 465 retired local government and primary school teachers receiving N500,969,762.47 in gratuities.
Overall, 2,209 retired local government and primary school teachers were paid N2,500,876,293.16 over five batches. The recipients of these payments were those who retired between 2012 and 2019.
