Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has canceled the civil service job appointments that were approved by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, and has announced a new recruitment process.
Fubara made this announcement on Friday, May 31, explaining that the individuals who benefited from the previous scheme were included as part of political patronage. He emphasized the need for a more transparent hiring process, which will begin shortly.
Addressing the issue of the 10,000 jobs, Fubara stated that upon taking office, he received a list of candidates from the 23 local government areas.
However, after a thorough review, it was found that 60 percent of the candidates were over-aged and had been selected for political reasons.
Fubara questioned the logic of hiring individuals who were already 52 years old, noting that they would have only a short tenure before retirement.
Fubara underscored the importance of employing individuals who represent the future, rather than filling positions through political favoritism.
He concluded that the new recruitment process would focus on merit and long-term service potential.
