Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has announced that his administration will begin implementing the new minimum wage starting next month.
This announcement was made on Wednesday during a meeting with the leadership of the labour unions in Zamfara State.
A statement from Sulaiman Bala Idris, the spokesperson for the Zamfara Governor, highlighted that the move to implement the minimum wage demonstrates the state government’s dedication to enhancing workers’ welfare.
The statement further disclosed that starting in June this year, the Zamfara State Government will pay a minimum wage of N30,000, a significant increase from the previous N7,000.
In his address to the leaders of the Zamfara State chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Governor Lawal emphasized that the adoption of the N30,000 minimum wage is intended to motivate workers in Zamfara.
He stated, “Today, I want to announce to the Zamfara State Labour Union leaders that my government will commence payment of thirty thousand Naira minimum wage next month in June.”
Governor Lawal recounted several civil service reforms his administration has undertaken since he assumed office, all aimed at ensuring the welfare of workers.
These reforms include the payment of withheld salaries for three months, the provision of leave grants, and other bonuses. Additionally, he mentioned that his government has disbursed a total of N4,337,087,490 in four installments to state and local government retirees, covering arrears that had not been paid since 2011.
Governor Lawal reassured that his administration has further plans to improve the efficiency of the civil service in Zamfara.
He stressed that no employee should worry about retirement, as the government is committed to ensuring timely payment of retirement benefits without any delays. He concluded by affirming the government’s dedication to its mission of rescuing the state’s civil service.
