HAPPENING NOW: Emefiele Gets N300m Bail Over Printing Of New Naira Note

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail set at N300 million following his arraignment on charges related to the improper printing of new naira notes. Emefiele, who was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), pleaded not guilty to the four-count charge.

The case is being heard by Justice Maryanne Anenih at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama. Emefiele is the sole defendant in this case.

In addition to the bail amount, several conditions have been imposed. Emefiele must provide two sureties, each of whom must own titled property within the Maitama area of the FCT. Furthermore, he is required to surrender his travel documents to the court and is prohibited from traveling outside Nigeria without the court’s permission.

Justice Anenih’s bail conditions mirror those previously set by Justice Hamza Muazu of the same High Court in a different criminal case involving Emefiele. Emefiele can meet the new bail conditions by submitting certified true copies of the documents he used to satisfy Justice Muazu’s bail requirements.

The trial is scheduled to commence on May 28.
