Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has launched the Ekiti Agro Marshals as part of efforts to enhance security in the state.
The security outfit is tasked with safeguarding farmlands, schools, and palaces to foster a conducive environment for farming, thus contributing to food security.
During the passing out parade of the marshals in Ado-Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji emphasized that the local security outfit is intended to complement the efforts of the Police and other security agencies in combating criminal activities within the state.
He noted that the establishment of the Agro Marshals was prompted by the President’s directive to governors to establish a special guard for protecting farmlands and forests.
This decision was further reinforced by recommendations from the security council and traditional rulers in Ekiti State.
Highlighting the importance of securing agricultural resources, educational institutions, and cultural heritage sites, Governor Oyebanji reiterated that the primary mandate of the marshals is to ensure the protection of farmlands, palaces, and schools across the state.
He assured the citizens of the government’s unwavering commitment to the security of lives and property.
Governor Oyebanji emphasized that the initiative is a collaborative effort between the state government, local authorities, and traditional institutions aimed at safeguarding the lives of farmers.
By enhancing safety on farms, the initiative seeks to boost food production and ensure food security in Ekiti State.
The governor charged the Marshals to carry out their duties diligently while respecting the fundamental human rights of citizens and operating within the confines of the country’s constitution.
He emphasized that the Agro Marshals are meant to complement, not replace, the formal security apparatus, and urged them to work in synergy with other security agencies.
Additionally, he noted that their local knowledge and access to intelligence will be crucial in ensuring the effective protection of farmlands, palaces, and schools across the state.
