Despite the economic hardship ravaging the country, lecturers and management of College of Nursing, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, has resolved to pile more misery on their students by slamming them with a compulsory payment of N70,000 per student, to ‘appreciate lecturers’.
According to a notice sent to the 3rd year class group seen by NewdayReporters, the N70,000 is the criteria for the students eligibility to write their Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) exam.
READ NOTICE BELOW:
“I wish to notify and compulsory for 2021A 3rd year students to pay the sun of #70,000 NMC exam fees/expenses/appreciation of staff.
“The above fee should be made to your Class rep via bank transfer (No cash is allowed).
“If you are owing any debit endeavor to clear all.
“This is the criteria for your eligibility to write your NMC exam.
“NOTE: Also alternative arrangements for busses that will convey all students to the exam venue for three days should be made.” The notice read.
An additional note ordered the students to make alternative transportation arrangements to their exam venue for three days. ‘This arrangement should be done amongst the students’. The instruction read.
The message also clarified that the payment is not for the NMC registration, asking the students to register for their examination by themselves.
With the deadline fast approaching, many students are struggling to raise the fee, leading to widespread discontent.
Further inquiry carried out by NewdayReporters confirmed that their affiliate, ‘National Open University have also been mandated to pay the sum of N35,000
While the exams are slated to begin on the 7th of May, 2024, concerns are being raised as to the level of exploitation ongoing in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
A student, affected by the financial exploitation who pleaded anonymity, expressed her fears to NewdayReporters.
According to her, despite the intimidation and exploitation, students are afraid to speak up because they have been threatened or their license can be seized.
She accused the principal, Mrs Aralu J. C of exploiting the students despite the harsh economic reality in the country.
Newday Reporters learnt that the class has a total of 64 students with each mandated to pay the sum of N70, 000 bringing the total amount to be collected from students to the tune of N4, 480, 000.
Another student (name withheld) confirmed the payment to NewdayReporters. According to the student, ‘the money is basically for the appreciation of the staff’.
