The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the tragic death of a 23-year-old student, Chinedu Hope, from the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic in Uwana, Ebonyi State.
Chinedu was allegedly drugged to death on his birthday by his friend, Dan. The incident occurred at a hideout operated by a drug dealer known as Yoko in Umuodudu Ibeku.
According to Mrs. Stella Ogbonnaya, Dan’s mother, Chinedu, who did not use hard drugs, was persuaded by Dan to accompany him to the hideout. Upon arrival, Chinedu decided to wait for Dan in Dan’s Keke, a tricycle, while Dan went inside the bunk.
When Chinedu grew concerned after waiting for too long, he entered the hideout to find Dan. Inside, he encountered Yoko and four others. Yoko insisted that anyone entering the hideout must partake in the drugs they were consuming.
Despite Chinedu’s refusal to take the drugs, Yoko ordered the others to tie him up. Dan assisted in tying Chinedu’s hands and legs before they forced him to ingest a mixture of ice (methamphetamine), jico, and other substances. They then threw him into a pit.
Chinedu, struggling to breathe, was rushed to the Keke by a young man named Aham, who was called to help. Unfortunately, Chinedu was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is ongoing.
The Central Police Station (CPS) in Umuahia received a report from Hope Oluoha, stating that Daniel Otuechere had taken his son, Hope Chinedu Prosper, to an unknown destination and returned with his lifeless body the next day.
Detectives from the Command visited the scene, and the body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy. Suspects connected to the crime have been arrested, and a discreet investigation is ongoing.
