The Women and Social Welfare Commissioner of Anambra State, Honorable Ify Obinabo, successfully apprehended a rape suspect named Anietie Tim, aged 40, in Onitsha after multiple failed attempts.
This achievement was made possible through the assistance of Onitsha resident and radio presenter, Francis Pember, who volunteered to aid in the apprehension after learning of the incident.
Anietie Tim, hailing from Eninan AkwaIbom, defended himself by claiming ignorance of the victim’s underage status. He further asserted that the victim, a 14-year-old, had tempted him, emphasizing his human nature as a man with natural impulses. Tim admitted to befriending the victim prior to the incident, alleging that she was neglected and starved at home.
Expressing gratitude, Francis Pember commended the state government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and expressed confidence in the ministry’s resolve not to allow the suspect to evade justice.
Following interrogation, Commissioner Obinabo directed that the suspect be handed over to the police for prosecution. Anietie Tim will face charges at the Children, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka.
It’s crucial to highlight that the incident occurred in 2022, during which the suspect evaded arrest with the aid of military personnel at the barracks where he resided. He also made threats against the victim’s mother, claiming impunity.
