The ongoing power struggle within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated as a northern group has rebuffed the advances of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and thrown their support behind Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Just days before the critical national executive council (NEC) meeting, the Arewa PDP Transparency Group criticized the recent media confrontations over the party’s leadership, asserting that Wike possesses the capability to rejuvenate the party’s prospects.
According to Hon Haruna Bature, the national chairman of the group, effective leadership entails care, responsibility, and adherence to the party’s founding principles. The group highlighted past leadership crises within the PDP, attributing them to a lack of political foresight and disregard for the party’s vision and the aspirations of Nigerians.
Bature emphasized that the PDP’s failure to ensure power rotation to the South contributed to its loss of power at the national level.
Addressing concerns about Wike’s affiliations with the ruling APC government, the group dismissed them as rooted in jealousy and political bias, pointing out the PDP’s success in recent state elections despite these apprehensions.
The Arewa PDP Transparency Group endorsed Wike as the National Leader of the party, citing his demonstrated commitment to inclusive and responsible leadership.
