President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive transformation of the Nigeria Police Force during his address at the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony in Abuja. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to modernizing, professionalizing, and making the police force more accountable since assuming office the previous year. One significant initiative was the declaration of April 7 as ‘Police National Day’ to honor the contributions of the police force.
Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, stressed the importance of training and capacity-building for police officers to effectively handle the complexities of modern policing. He outlined various reforms undertaken, including investment in training, upgrading equipment and technology, and enhancing the status of officers during and after their service.
The president’s speech, titled “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” lauded the exemplary patriotism and dedication of the police force in the face of security challenges. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to transforming the police force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution that reflects the nation’s values.
Acknowledging the sacrifices of the police force, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for recognizing the hard work and patriotism of officers. He emphasized the importance of celebrating deserving officers and rooting out any misconduct within the force to pave the way for a more effective police force.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support and highlighted efforts to enhance the performance of the nation’s security forces. He praised the recipients of awards and commendations for their dedication, courage, and selflessness, assuring them that their contributions would be remembered.
