The Inspector General of Police in Nigeria, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Controller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service to place Mrs. Okoli Chioma Egodi on a watchlist.
This action comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings involving Mrs. Okoli, who is facing prosecution by both the Nigeria Police Force and Erisco Foods Limited. The charges stem from a Facebook review she posted about one of the company’s products.
Despite calls from various quarters, including civil society organizations and Amnesty International, urging an end to the perceived harassment and intimidation of Mrs. Okoli, the Inspector General of Police is adamant in his decision. In a letter dated April 2, 2024, with reference number OB:3380/IGP.SEC/MU/T.6/ABJ/VOL.3/111, the Inspector General specifically requests the Immigration Controller General, Kemi Nandap, to ensure Mrs. Okoli is placed on the watchlist and prevented from leaving the country.
Signed by A.A. Elleman DCP, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit at Force Headquarters, Nigeria Police Force, the letter outlines the allegations against Mrs. Okoli, including criminal conspiracy, de-marketing, blackmail, attempted extortion, and cyberbullying. The directive instructs the Nigeria Immigration Service to take action if Mrs. Okoli is encountered, including arrest and notification of the IGP Monitoring Unit.
The letter emphasizes the seriousness of the investigation and solicits the cooperation of the Nigeria Immigration Service in ensuring Mrs. Okoli’s restricted movement.
It provides contact information for reporting sightings of Mrs. Okoli and concludes with an expression of anticipation for cooperation and the regards of the Inspector General of Police.
