The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party is welcome to leave the NLC if he so desires.
According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, the union does not recognize Julius Abure as the National Chairman despite his reelection through what they deem an “illegal” national convention.
Upah emphasized that the NLC would not hinder the candidate’s decision to depart from the party, describing him as an asset but leaving the choice to him.
The remarks from Upah comes amidst a leadership struggle within the Labour Party, with calls for the resignation of its national chairman from NLC President, Joe Ajaero.
Former Anambra governor Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate, expressed frustration over the convention’s outcome, fueling speculation about his potential defection to another political party.
However, Upah reiterated that the decision whether to stay or leave the party rests solely with Obi, and the NLC would not intervene in his choice or beg him to stay.
