BREAKING: NFF Appoints Austine Eguavoen As Super Eagles Coach, Veteran Replaces Portuguese Peseiro

Ex-Nigeria international, Augustine Eguavoen, has once again taken over as the head coach of the Super Eagles on an interim basis following the departure of former manager Jose Peseiro on Friday.

Super Eagles media officer, Raji Babafemi, confirmed this development to Peoples Gazette on Saturday while responding to a message seeking confirmation on the reports.

“Usually, when the head coach of the main national team is out, the TD (Technical Director) takes over,” Raji told the Gazette.

Eguavoen has served as the technical director of the team after he was relieved of the position as the interim coach two years ago after the Eagles crashed out of the 2021 AFCON in the round of 16 and failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

According to Raji, the former Sunshine Stars manager will temporarily lead the team par protocol until a permanent replacement is named by the NFF, who are yet to officially comment on the national team coaching situation.

This is the fourth time that Eguavoen would be tasked to lead the senior squad, with his first stint being between 2005 and 2007. He came on an interim basis in 2010 and again between 2021 and 2022.

Mr Peseiro announced his departure on X on Friday after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decided against renewing his contracts despite Nigeria’s impressive outing at the last AFCON where Eagles finished second.
