Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has begun reconciliatory moves to resolve the political crisis in the state after his recent agreement with Minister Nyesom Wike in Abuja.
Despite opposition from stakeholders like Edwin Clark and Chief Rufus Ada-Geroge, Governor Fubara is said to have directed officials to start implementing the peace deal brokered by President Tinubu.
Reports indicate that Fubara has paid the allowances and entitlements of the 27 state lawmakers that defected to APC up till December. The payments were made on Thursday, confirming the governor’s desire to build bridges.
Additionally, Fubara has purchased new vehicles for all commissioners still serving in his cabinet as part of confidence-building measures.
This comes weeks after the demolition of the state assembly complex that sparked a crisis when 23 lawmakers sought to impeach the governor.
With the lawmakers’ defection rendering the assembly non-functional, observers are watching if these peace overtures will de-escalate tensions in Rivers politics.
