Popular resort centre in Oba Idemili-South Local Government Area of Anambra State called Rojenny Games Village, factories, houses and other economic buildings may become extinct if the Federal Government does not commence urgent remedial actions on the landslide that has cut off Oba axis of Onitsha-Owerri road gradually submerging the entire area.
The very drastic situation was brought to the fore when the Senator representing Anambra-Central senatorial district at the 10th National Assembly Chief Victor Umeh paid a working visit to the area in the company of Oba cabinet chiefs.
The erosion site which is few metres away from Rojenny Games Village Oba, is becoming deeper and deeper threatening to submerge First Choice Plastic Industries Limited, houses and economic buildings in the area.
Sen. Umeh who was apparently sympathetic while inspecting the devastating menace caused by the landslide in the area, implored the Federal Government not to delay in responding to the situation because his assessment of the level of devastation showed that Onitsha-Owerri Federal Highway in Oba may not survive the next two weeks, if the rains intensify.
Umeh said when he saw the frightening videos of the Oba landslide sent to him by the proprietor of Rojenny Games Village, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, he returned immediately from Abuja to see things for himself.
He therefore assured the people of Oba and Nigerians in general that he will take the matter to the Senate President Dr. Godswill Obot Akpabio so that government will source funds to arrest the situation.
Umeh said, “If we don’t do anything now, this place will become a huge gully and this road will fail. The multiplier effect to the economy of this region will be so much that government will be compelled to do something immediately.
I am hopeful that the President will do something. The National Assembly will also intervene and from there, I know help will come. “
Umeh maintained that the Southeast zone is an erosion belt resulting from soil failure and other ecological issues, stressing that so many houses have fallen into bottom less pit in Oko, Obosi and other communities in Anambra State.
According to him, the Federal Government should declare Southeast erosion disaster zone so that appropriate steps would be taken in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Protection Agency and others to battle erosion menace in the Southeast region.
